The City Council of Móstoles is launching a project for service-learning within the framework of the actions of the Volunteer Information Point of Móstoles, belonging to the network of volunteer information points of the Community of Madrid, to promote intergenerational connection between young people and older adults in the municipality.
This project, developed by Second ESO students from the International School Villa de Móstoles, in collaboration with the municipal Residence for the Elderly Juan XXIII, will allow them to provide companionship to the residents and engage in various enriching activities together. Additionally, this project, part of the Local Plan for Childhood and Adolescence (PLIA), enables students to develop greater responsibility, communication skills, empathy, active listening, and temporary disconnection from screens and social media. It also fosters the social commitment of young people, teamwork, and strengthens their bond with the community.
Furthermore, this initiative contributes to improving the mental and emotional health of the elderly by reducing their time of loneliness and social isolation. The activities will take place in the common room of the municipal Residence Juan XXIII, on different shifts, on Fridays from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm between April and June.
To tailor the activities that would generate greater interest among the residents, a questionnaire was given to them, and the main preference was to engage in conversations with volunteers (80% acceptance rate), followed by the celebration of thematic parties (68%), such as the April Fair or the Day of San Isidro in May, where they will dress up in traditional costumes and enjoy traditional pastries. Other preferences include playing board games like dominoes, Parcheesi, cards, chess (66%), participating in musical activities (62%) like singing, listening to music, and dancing various musical styles from both current and past eras. There will also be arts and crafts (58%) and self-care activities (44%).
The student volunteers will attend these meetings with the elderly alongside an adult companion. The first meeting will take place on April 4th.
